Difficulty depends partly on the learner. A student who enjoys extended algebraic structures may cope well with a long chain but lose marks in rapid topic switching. Another may retrieve short methods quickly but struggle to sustain proof or modelling. This design demands both traceable written reasoning and efficient selection. Paper 1 should show relationships, substitutions, transformations, units and conclusions. Do not assume that a GCE specification has the same number of papers, duration or calculator policy. Put its official assessment table beside the HKDSE facts and compare row by row. Leave an item unresolved until an official source answers it; filling the gap from a different examining body produces a confident but unusable plan.
Audit topic depth and notation during a transition
Matching topic names can hide different tasks. Quadratics may extend from routine roots to parameters and graphical conditions. Trigonometry may require identities, functions and solutions over a specified interval. Calculus may test manipulation, rate interpretation, optimisation or modelling. Statistics may require not only calculation but a defensible choice, assumptions and a contextual conclusion.
A student moving towards a GCE route may discover that long algebraic chains, logarithms, functions or calculus expose upstream weaknesses. A student moving towards HKDSE may understand deep individual units but be unfamiliar with the breadth of the Compulsory Part, bilingual terminology or Paper 2 pacing. Students need to understand what a device has calculated. Estimate sign and order of magnitude before entry, then substitute back, compare with a graph or use another representation afterwards. Retain exact values or adequate precision through intermediate work where appropriate, and round only as the question requires. Marking details depend on the paper and official scheme. Students should not memorise a crude rule that a certain number of lines guarantees a certain number of marks. Run a measured transition trial

- Sample algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus and statistics from both routes.
- Label content, notation, language, technology, presentation and timing differences.
- Repair the earliest gap through a short four-week cycle with prompts gradually withdrawn.
- Retest with a different representation after a delay instead of repeating the original item.
- Update the route decision using new school evidence, not a predicted grade from one test.

Start at programme level. Record two or three plausible degree directions, the intended intake year, the official page update date and the exact mathematics wording. Place official requirements beside the student’s representative-task evidence, available school support and sustainable weekly workload. A route that meets a formal condition but cannot be maintained through ordinary and assessment-heavy weeks is not automatically the better choice.
Evaluate tuition through evidence
Before a trial lesson, provide the current specification, school plan, recent work and next assessment scope. Observe whether the tutor confirms the examining body, distinguishes topic overlap from assessment differences, identifies the earliest error and asks the student to justify a method. A polished demonstration of a hard problem does not prove continuing alignment.
After support is reduced, the student should attempt a changed item and explain the decision that changed.
